Montessori is a system of education that is both a philosophy of child development and a methodology of guiding each child’s development to its full potential. In a Montessori program, children grow in an environment of mutual respect to become responsible global citizens. Every classroom is equipped with specially designed Montessori learning materials and children experience a spiraling, connected curriculum founded on Montessori principles.
Located in the Montrose area of Houston, Baker Montessori has served Houston students since its construction in 1924. In February of 2005, HISD and Friends of Montessori (FOM) entered into an agreement to create HISD's first All-Montessori school. FOM is made up of volunteer parents, teachers, and community members dedicated to expanding the opportunity for, and maintaining the integrity and excellence of, Montessori programs in the Houston public schools.
Baker Montessori also has strong support from the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), which is a volunteer organization which maintains a close working relationship between parents, teachers/staff, and students. The PTO has been instrumental in enhancing the educational experience at Baker Montessori by supporting the students and teaching staff through volunteering and fundraising efforts to provide additional resources, services, Montessori training, and special projects.
Baker Montessori is a site for the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD) which was instituted by the Texas Education Agency to provide quality services to students in Texas who are deaf or hearing impaired. Eligible students are supported with services and accommodations, which may include a communication facilitator, hearing aids, and/or FM system, as well as specially-designed instruction from a Teacher of the Deaf.
