Grading & Report Cards

REPORT CARDS

HISD’s online program, PowerSchool, provides parents access to children’s grades. Please monitor your child’s grades in this system.

In addition, a report card is issued to the parent or guardian at the end of each six week grading period for grades PK-8. Grades reflecting mastery of grade level assignments in the classroom will be the basis for the report card grades. Report card dates can be found on the HISD Academic Calendar. Be sure to review your child’s report cards with them and celebrate their efforts. If you have a concern, develop a plan of action with your child and teacher to ensure that your child maintains passing grades. Report cards must be signed and returned to the teacher.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN

Students enrolled in prekindergarten classes in Houston ISD are implementing Developmental Stages endorsed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) which sets standards at the national level for appropriate early childhood practices.  The objectives that will be assessed during the year are set forth by the State of Texas and are reflected in the HISD curriculum. While children have their own individual timetables for development, all children go through stages.  Stages are an important component of a child’s development because a specific set of criteria must be met and mastered at each stage before the child is able to move to the next stage of development.

The stages that your child will be assessed on during the school year include:

1 – Discovery – First Steps

In Montessori, we call this stage First Period. The first period is about introducing and naming the concept. The child is encouraged to observe and absorb the information through additional repetition and practice with the concept.

2 – Exploring – Showing Progress

In Montessori, we call this stage Second Period. The second period is about recognition of the concept. The child is encouraged to repeat and practice the concept and has not yet mastered.

3 – Connecting – Ready to Apply

In Montessori, we call this stage Third Period. The third period is about recalling the concept. It is in this period that the child demonstrates mastery of the concept. The child is encouraged to extend learning with higher order thinking opportunities and is introduced to the next lesson.

KINDER - 5th

Students enrolled in the Montessori program in Kinder - 5th grade use a modified student progress scale which may appear as alpha values during the year that convert to numeric values for final grades. Grades reflect a combination of Montessori work goal progress and standard mastery.

6th- 8th

Students enrolled in the Montessori program in 6th - 8th grade use the standard numeric student progress scale. Grades reflect a combination of Montessori work goal progress and standard mastery.

Academic Subjects Conduct
90–100 = High Progress (HP)                   E = Excellent
80–89 = Middle Progress (MP) S = Satisfactory
70–79 = Low Progress (LP) P = Poor; below average
Below 70 = No Progress (NP) U = Unsatisfactory

PROGRESS REPORTS

Beginning in Kindergarten, formal progress reports will be sent home during the third week of a reporting period or as often as necessary. Be sure to regularly monitor your child’s progress on the HISD parent portal of Parent Connect. When you receive a progress report, you must sign and return the form to indicate the parent or guardian has read the report.
