RDSPD
Regional Day School Program for the Deaf
Houston ISD provides a continuum of special education services to meet the needs of eligible students with disabilities. We advocate for students with disabilities to receive inclusive instruction with their non-disabled peers and support them in their learning.
Baker Montessori is a site for the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD) which was instituted by the Texas Education Agency to provide quality services to students in Texas who are deaf or hearing impaired. The district provides specially designed instruction, accommodations, and technology supports like assistive devices to access the standard and alternate curriculum for students with significant hearing impairments including deafness. Services include sign language interpretation, audiological services, intensive instruction from a certified teacher of the deaf,
We currently house three service delivery models, including:
- Total-Communication in general education: Total communication advocates the use of any means of communication that gives a hearing impaired child the chance to develop competence with language. Such means include speech, amplification, sign language, finger-spelling, speech-reading, gestures, and pantomime.
- Auditory-Oral in general education: The auditory-oral method involves amplification (hearing aids and FM systems), speech, and speech reading without the use of sign language or finger-spelling.
- Self-Contained Program for the Deaf (Pre-K and K only)
